Underwater Photographer of the Year 2026 (UPY)

Underwater Photographer of the Year operates the strictest enforcement regime among major wildlife contests. The 2026 cycle introduced two notable additions: mandatory RAW-file inspection of every shortlisted image (specifically to detect AI content) and a lifetime ban from UPY for anyone caught submitting AI-generated work. The rules are unusually specific about what is and is not permitted, including a free Mobile Phone category sponsored by DIVEVOLK.

AI policy

UPY rules now specifically state that while we allow processing, using AI software to generate entire pictures or to generate parts of photos is strictly forbidden. From this year we will now request and check the RAW files of all shortlisted images before confirming placings, specifically to check for AI content. UPY is introducing a lifetime ban from UPY for anyone who is caught trying to dupe the contest.

RAW files

From this year we will now request and check the RAW files of all shortlisted images before confirming placings, specifically to check for AI content.

Editing rules

Cleaning of backscatter, removal of UFOs (Unwanted Floating Objects — like your buddy's fin), and digital manipulation in Photoshop/Lightroom are permitted as long as the photographer drives the process. AI noise reduction is acceptable.
