AI policy

AI cannot be used to generate or create the image or video, in whole or in part, including but not limited to generating elements, editing, or enhancing.

RAW files

Your RAW file must allow us to “Reset to Default” on Photoshop so we can properly review.

Editing rules

The public side of Pictures of the Year runs through National Geographic's Your Shot hashtag challenges on Instagram (the 2025 edition used #NatGeoYourShotPOY25). The Your Shot FAQ is the only published rule set: AI-generated and digitally manipulated images are not acceptable, AI cannot be used to generate or create the image in whole or in part, including generating elements, editing or enhancing, and all submitted images should represent a true and accurate depiction of life or events. Photographers whose work is selected must provide the RAW or original file, a caption and a signed asset release. Distinct from the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition run by APL Media.
