On 9 September 2026 Apple announced Apple Reference Image alongside the iPhone 18 Pro: an opt-in Reference mode in which the Main camera's new sensor signs what it records, and a reference image is kept beside the photo so the two can be compared later. It is the first capture-time authenticity record Apple has announced, and it is narrower than the headline. It covers one camera on two phone models, only when the mode was chosen before the shot, and the check is a side-by-side view on Apple's platforms. As of 15 September 2026, nothing outside Apple's platforms can read a reference image, and iPhone 18 Pro models in the EU cannot capture one at launch.
What Apple announced
The feature is one section of the iPhone 18 Pro press release, not an announcement of its own. Apple's description, in full:
"Users can now prove the authenticity of a photo taken on iPhone 18 Pro models with Apple Reference Image, powered by the new sensor in the Main camera that can sign every pixel it sees. When a photo is taken in the new Reference mode, the camera captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute develops into an unalterable reference image. Reference images can be viewed in the Photos app alongside the main image, like a digital negative, to visually compare the two assets and determine if any edits were made."
Apple adds three things. It presents Reference Image as one of three tools: image metadata and upcoming support for the SynthID standard, it says, can also help users identify images generated or edited with AI, with SynthID arriving in a software update later this year for most edited images, depending on the edits applied. APIs in iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27 let third-party apps display reference images; Apple mentions viewing only, and the view-but-not-capture reading comes from the explainers that followed, not from Apple. And Apple calls the set a multifaceted approach to image authenticity that it describes as vital for photojournalists, photographers and everyday viewers.
The footnotes draw the boundaries. The feature is opt-in. It is not available at launch in China, which Apple attributes to regulatory requirements. In the EU, iPhone 18 Pro models cannot capture reference images at launch, though anyone on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 or macOS 27 can still develop and view them. Apple gave no reason for the EU restriction, and this article does not guess at one.
The hardware behind the feature is the new 48 MP sensor in the variable-aperture Main camera. Apple ties signing to that camera alone, and its product comparison lists Reference Image against the Fusion Main camera of the 18 Pro models only; the Ultra Wide and Telephoto are not covered, and the iPhone Duo, due on 23 October, is not listed with the feature. Pre-orders opened on 12 September, availability begins on 18 September in a first wave of more than 65 countries and regions, and iOS 27 shipped on 14 September.
The release also has gaps. It does not mention C2PA or Content Credentials, the open provenance standard that Google, Samsung, Leica, Sony, Canon and Nikon use. It names no file format and no export path, says nothing about whether a reference survives a share to another app or a web upload, and offers nobody outside Apple's platforms a way to inspect one. It is silent on keys, on what "unalterable" means in cryptographic terms, and on whether Photos shows any result beyond the two images.
How a reference image works
Reading Apple's paragraph together with the August beta reporting from MacRumors and the launch coverage from Nieman Lab gives four steps, with the middle one better documented than Apple's paragraph suggests.
1. Capture. In Reference mode the Main camera sensor signs its output as it records it. That much is Apple's own sentence, and it is the new part. How the sensor signs, and what key it uses, Apple has not published. If the sensor itself signs, the signature is applied before the image processor and before iOS handle the data, at a layer no app can reach. That is our reading of Apple's wording, not something Apple has stated. Our own Lumethic Capture records the raw sensor mosaic and attests the device it ran on, but it cannot sign inside the sensor, and neither can any other iOS app.
2. The cloud step, on demand. Apple says Private Cloud Compute "develops" the signed sensor data into the reference image, and its footnote says users in the EU can "develop and view" reference images without capturing them, so developing is a step of its own rather than part of the shot. The iOS 27 beta privacy disclosure, as MacRumors reported it in August, describes that step. The user taps the Reference badge on the photo, which sends the raw image, sensor signatures, capture time frame and the sensor's hardware identifiers to Private Cloud Compute. The service determines whether the camera captured the photo, gives it a unique ID, and returns an authenticated version to the device. Apple, per the same disclosure, receives sensor data, a hash and the assessment results, but not the raw photo. Nieman Lab's launch account matches in outline: capture telemetry, hardware identifiers and sensor signatures go up, the service creates a signature tying the reference image to that specific iPhone, and Apple says it never sees the photo itself and handles only photos users choose to sign. Two things stay open: where the reference pixels are rendered, on the phone or in the cloud, and how "raw image sent" squares with "raw photo not received". Apple's developer documentation may settle both. Until then we report the disclosure as MacRumors read it and add nothing to it.
3. Two saved assets. You get a normal, editable photo and the reference image beside it. The privacy disclosure says the developed asset carries a unique ID, and Nieman Lab reports that the provenance data is written into the image's metadata while the image itself is not altered, so the proof sits in metadata rather than in the pixels. Neither source says whether that metadata lives in the photo, in the reference, or in both. Apple's own text mentions neither the identifier nor where it lives.
4. The comparison. In Photos, the reference sits next to the photo and you look at both. Apple's word is "visually". The privacy disclosure speaks of "assessment results", so the service does reach a verdict on whether the camera captured the photo. The release does not say whether Photos, or an app using the new API, shows that verdict as a pass or fail, or shows only the two images.
Nieman Lab put the distinction well. SynthID is a tag that follows an image around the web. A reference image is a receipt the photographer keeps and can produce later. The two do opposite jobs: SynthID marks an image as generated or edited, a reference image vouches that one is real. A receipt helps its holder defend their own work. It does nothing for a viewer scrolling past a copy with no reference attached.
What it can establish, and what it cannot
On the published text, a reference image supports two statements:
- This sensor, on this phone, recorded these pixels at this moment.
- The photo beside it has, or has not, been changed since, as far as the eye can tell.
It does not support these:
- Anything about a photo that has no reference. The mode is opt-in, so absence proves nothing about the photo or its owner.
- Anything about the scene. A signed record of a staged event, of a print, or of a photo displayed on a screen is a genuine signed record.
- Edits too subtle for a side-by-side look. Small generative edits are the hard case, and the eye is a poor instrument for finding them.
- Verification by anyone outside Apple's apps. A newsroom, a court or an insurer has no published way to check a reference image without Apple in the loop.
- Survival of the proof when the photo is shared. The proof sits in metadata, and Apple has not said whether it survives export, messaging or a social upload. A reader on the MacRumors launch thread asked whether a file could be modified to falsely claim it is a reference image. The release gives no answer.
Five limits that decide whether it applies to you
- iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max only. No earlier iPhone can capture a reference image, and neither can the iPhone Duo. A non-Pro iPhone 18 does not exist yet; supply-chain reporting puts it in spring 2027, and Apple has not announced a date. Older devices on iOS 27 can still develop and view reference images made by others.
- Main camera only. The Ultra Wide and Telephoto are not covered.
- Reference mode, chosen before the shot. Forget to switch it on and there is no reference. Nothing is retroactive: the photos already in your library cannot acquire one.
- EU capture off at launch, China not available at launch. Own an 18 Pro in Germany or France and you can develop and view reference images on iOS 27, but not make your own. Apple has given no date for either.
- SynthID is a separate tool with its own gaps. It arrives later this year for most edited images, depending on the edits. Coverage of Apple's June announcement reported that Image Playground output and edits made with Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing will carry the watermark. Apple's September footnote is narrower than that, and Apple has not said whether edits made in other apps are covered. It is Google's watermark, currently read by Google's detector.
Readers will notice one more thing. The same press release, in its software section, promotes Spatial Reframing, Extend and an upgraded Clean Up for changing a photo's composition after capture, and says Image Playground now produces photorealistic images. Those are the tools the SynthID update is meant to mark. Apple's authenticity record and Apple's generative editing tools arrived in one announcement, and a reference image shows that a photo was changed after capture, not which tool changed it. The watermark, once it ships, is what would name the tool.
Reference Image, Content Credentials, and the original file
Three approaches now exist for establishing where a photo came from. They differ on who signs, where the proof lives and who can check it. Cells marked "not published" are things Apple has not said; we do not fill them in.

Apple has not adopted C2PA, so phone provenance in 2026 is three incompatible answers: default-on C2PA on the Pixel and, by Vivo's account, the X300 Pro, AI-edit-only C2PA on Samsung, and an Apple-only reference on the 18 Pro, with most phone makers still signing nothing at all. In August 2026 David Buchanan demonstrated forged Content Credentials from a fully patched Pixel by way of a one-click root exploit, a year after the Nikon Z6 III signing defeat made the same point: a signature is evidence about a capture path, not proof, and two C2PA capture paths have already been defeated in public. The third column is the only one that works for the photos you already have, which is most of them.
What to do on any other iPhone
If you shoot an iPhone 17, an iPhone 12, an iPhone Duo, or an 18 Pro bought in the EU, Apple's feature does not let you capture a reference. Two routes still cover you.
At capture time, a signing app. Lumethic Capture records the unprocessed sensor mosaic from the iPhone camera, attests the device it ran on, and gives the photo a capture record that can be verified on lumethic.com. The limit: an app runs above the image pipeline, so it cannot sign inside the sensor the way the 18 Pro now does. Within that limit, a signed capture from a dedicated app is still more evidence than an unmodified older iPhone provides, which is none, and it works today on every iPhone that runs the app.
After the fact, comparison against the stored original. Phones usually keep each photo as captured, though that file is an already-processed HEIC or JPEG rather than sensor data, and storage-saving settings can replace it with a smaller copy. Comparing the stored file with a published copy establishes one thing: that the published copy derives from that file, within stated thresholds. It does not establish that the file came from a camera sensor, because a generated image can sit in a camera roll too; that is the part a capture-time signature or a sensor mosaic is for. Lumethic's verification runs the comparison on phone photos with its thresholds and methodology version stated, and it is the only route in this article that also works backwards, for the photos taken years before any of these systems existed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the iPhone 18 Pro support C2PA Content Credentials?
No. Apple Reference Image is Apple's own system, and the iPhone 18 Pro press release does not mention C2PA. A reference image cannot be read by the C2PA validators that check photos from Pixel phones or from Leica, Sony, Canon and Nikon cameras.
Can I verify an Apple Reference Image without an Apple device?
Not as of 15 September 2026. Viewing a reference image needs Apple's Photos app on iOS, iPadOS or macOS 27, or a third-party app built on Apple's new viewing API, so a Mac or iPad will do but a Windows PC or an Android phone will not. Apple has published no web tool, no file format and no verifier for other platforms.
Does Apple Reference Image work in the EU?

No. ProRAW is an editable, demosaiced file format you shoot in. A reference image is a signed record kept beside a normal photo for comparison. Apple has not published the reference image's format, so treat any description of it as a file type as unconfirmed.
Does it prove the photo is not AI-generated?
It records that the 18 Pro's sensor captured these pixels. It says nothing about what was in front of the lens, and nothing about photos that carry no reference. A phone pointed at a screen showing an AI image produces a genuine reference image of that screen.
What about older iPhones?
On iOS 27 they can view and develop reference images made on an 18 Pro, but they cannot capture one. At capture time, Lumethic Capture gives a photo a verifiable capture record on any iPhone that runs it. Afterwards, comparison against the stored original shows whether a published copy derives from that file, for any phone and any year of photo.
Apple has built a receipt for one camera on two phones, kept it on its own platforms, and left the checking to the eye. That is a real step. It also confirms that the record of what the sensor saw is what a dispute turns on. For the phone in most people's pockets, that record is still the original file, and the way to make it count is to keep it and compare it. Neither of those needs an 18 Pro.
